| Hi fitness enthusiasts! Winter is here! With the holiday season many people worry about putting on the holiday weight. Here are some tips to stay fit. #1) Exercise… with the holidays people get overwhelmed with work, shopping, family obligations, travel, holiday parties, etc. that it is easy to forget to exercise for 30 minutes to an hour a day. Try to make sure you get your time. #2) Have a training partner. Having someone to meet will make you more likely to get your run or walk in for the day. #3) The fun tip… remember it takes 3200 calories to gain one pound. Eating more during Thanksgiving Day is very unlikely to put on a single pound. A 100 pound girl would have to eat 4700 calories to gain one pound because she burns about 1500 by just living a normal day (a 200 pound person burns 3000 calories in a day being just somewhat active). #4) Holiday weight really comes from the season. From Thanksgiving to New Years people generally eat more, attend more social events and exercise less. Less exercise and more calories = holiday weight. #5) Running in the cold really isn’t that bad. If properly dressed, within 5 minutes a person is generally warm and feeling pretty good. Plus winter running is refreshing and self rewarding. I always feel better when I did a run in weather most people won’t drive in. Plus consistent training over the winter means better times in the spring. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season! Runabout Sports Staff |

| Running Tip: Hills, love them or hate them, they are one of the best forms of training you can do. Hills force the knee to lift higher, work the hip flexors (the muscles used for running, also referred to as the drivers), increase leg strength and help with running economy. They make you a stronger, faster and smoother runner. So next time smile when running a steep hill, it’s doing you a favor. :-) |
