Ground Hog Scurry: This 5.76 mile run is generally run the first Saturday in February. There is also a 2 mile run. The route is on the Huckleberry Trail. There are buses to take the 5.76 milers back to Blacksburg. The finish is at the Christiansburg Mall. Go to the results page forthe past two years times.


Cycling Double Header: Put on by the New River Valley Bicycle Association, Runabout Sports has directed it the past three years. The rides take place every year on Memorial Day Weekend. On Saturday is the Wilderness Road Ride which is a family friendly event. It starts and finishes at Radford University. The ride options in past years have been 13 miles, 29 miles, 57 and 78 miles.
 

The next day is one of the toughest rides in the country; Mountains of Misery. Mountains of Misery offers a century with 10,000 feet of climbing and a double metric with 13,000. This event is very challenging. About 500 riders come every year from all over the United States. Both the Wilderness Road Ride and Mountains of Misery have rest stops with food and drinks (plus smiling volunteers). There is also SAG and HAM support. Blacksburg Striders Summer Training Program: The program starst in the second week of June and goes till the first week of August. All ages are welcomed but children 12 and under need to have aparent with them. The program is run by Runabout Sports and the only fee is a Blacksburg Striders Membership. The program is at 9:00am. Please contact Runabout Sports for locations or more information.


High Performance Distance Academy: The High Performance Distance Academy attracts high school students from all over the east coast who want to become better distance runners. The academy is held at Virginia Tech for one week, usually the second week in July. To learn more please click on "running camp" on the home page.


Draper Mile: The Draper Mile has been a featured event for the Steppin Out Festival held annually in Blacksburg for 25 years. The mile has a slight downhill and always has a full field of 150 runners. The Draper Mile is put on by the Blacksburg Striders and Runabout Sports in 2006.


Summer Sizzle 8K and 5K: Put on by Runabout Sports and the Blacksburg Cross Country Running Team, this race is a fundraiser for the high school. The race takes place at the corporate research center at Virginia Tech. This year the event will be in September.


Brush Mountain Breakdown 1/2 marathon, 10K and 3K: October 14th, 2006 will be this years event. The trail run takes place in Pandapas Park and is in Conjuntion with the Rowdy Dawg Mountain Bike Race held the next day. The entire course is on trails and is great fun.
